Health Conditions, Health Seeking Behavior, and Access to Insurance among Overseas Filipino Workers

This study is being proposed in order to provide evidence-based policy recommendations aimed at improving the health conditions of overseas Filipino workers and increasing their access to health insurance. It will examine the factors that influence OFWs’ membership in, access to and utilization of PhilHealth services among overseas Filipino workers. It will likewise explore sound strategies or mechanisms to improve access to PhilHealth services among Filipino labor migrants.

This proposed study also aims to contribute to theory building by revisiting the social determinants of heath paradigm. This paradigm argues that there are structural factors (may it be economic, social, cultural, etc.) that can influence health seeking and access to insurance. It also contends that health should not only be understood in the context of biomedicine. Socio-economic and cultural factors also play a role in health. The other significance of the proposed study is it addresses a literature gap insofar as health and health seeking behaviors of overseas Filipino workers are concerned.
