METHODS: A self administered questionnaire consisting of 31 multiple choice questions on the knowledge, attitude and practices of caregivers regarding dogbites in children were distributed and results were tabulated by determining the frequency of each selection
SUBJECTS: Population consisted of subjects aged 17 years and above who were potential caregivers or are caregivers to pediatric subjects.
RESULTS: Respondents exhibited a satisfactory degree of knowledge on the epidemiology of rabies, modes of transmission and proper first aid measures which should be undertaken to lessen the morbidity and mortality of rabies.
COCNLUSION: Public awareness, responsible pet ownership, the pediatrician, role in delivering anticipatory guidelines to parents regarding rabies and other pet associated hazards still need to be emphasized to lessen the incidence of rabies which is still a significant public health problem in our country.
