Effect of Cinnamon on Fasting Blood Glucose of Individuals with Prediabetes

Using a randomized, open-label, controlled, intervention study, a total of 40 Filipinos with prediabetes, were divided randomly into two groups. Cinnamon group were given a monthly supply of 1000mg Cinnamon capsules for 90 days, and Control group was given the standard of care which includes lifestyle changes.

A decrease in mean FBS is observed for both Cinnamon (5.53 + 1.35 vs 6.17 + .52; p=.05) and Control group (5.39 + 1.14 vs 6.21 + .5; p= .007) and is proven to be statistically significant. Mean FBS after intervention ( day 90) was almost the same for both Cinnamon (5.53 + 1.35) and Control group (5.38 + 1.14). We failed to show a significant difference in the reduction of mean FBS in subjects given Cinnamon over those given the standard of care with p value of .73.

We found that Cinnamon taken at a dose of 1000 mg daily for 3 months lowers the blood glucose in patients with prediabetes but this reduction has no significant difference if subjects engaged in lifestyle modification which is the standard of care for prediabetes.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether cinnamon reduces the fasting blood glucose of subjects having impaired fasting glucose (IFG), and whether there is a significant reduction in the fasting blood glucose results of subjects given cinnamon over those given standard of care.
