This is a descriptive cross-sectional study which involved all health care workers employed at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center. They were given and asked to answer a self-administered questionnaire. Knowledge and level of awareness about cervical cancer: (risk factors, causes, purpose and eligibility for screening and screening techniques implemented in VSMMC) and attitude towards cervical cancer screening program were assessed using the self administered questionnaire.
Response rate was 94% (355). Almost all of the subjects were aware of the existence of cervical cancer screening program in VSMMC, the different cervical cancer screening tests done in the hospital and when to initiate the cervical cancer screening. However, only about one-fourth of the study subjects know the purpose of doing the screening tests. Majority of the study subjects were only slightly aware of the risk factors for cervical cancer and criteria for cervical cancer screening. Only a quarter of them submitted themselves or encouraged their loved ones to submit to the screening test for cervical cancer with the reason that it is the least of their priorities. However, more than 75% of them had encouraged others to avail of the screening program. They have a positive attitude on the screening program since more than 90% were willing o submit themselves for the screening in the future.
VSMMC health care workers are aware of the cervical cancer screening program available in the hospital; its available tests, and when to initiate the screening and they have a positive attitude about submitting themselves for screening in the future. But these health care workers who should be responsible for opportunistic screening of women they care for, are not keen on getting screened themselves and consider screening the least of their priorities. They also lack awareness on the purpose of doing the screening tests, the risk factors of cervical cancer and criteria for doing the procedure.
