The anticoagulant activity of Ixora coccinea (Santan) flower extract using normal human blood.

Context/Background: Disorders involving the blood vessels are becoming rampant and contribute to the total death rate in the world. The use of anticoagulants has been proven to be effective treatment. Innovations with the use of herbal medications as a replacement or in conjunction with synthetic anticoagulants contribute to the expanding world of medicine. Objectives: To determine the presence of anticoagulant activity of Ixora coccinea (Santan) flower extract on  normal human blood sample. Study Design: True experimental design, the post test-only method was utilized. Lee-White method or the tube method was used to measure clotting time. Study Setting: Cebu Institute of Medicine, F. Ramos, St., Cebu City Philippines. Study Population: Thirty (30) subjects among a group of 18 to 23-year-olds that fitted with the inclusion criteria. Maneuver: An aqueous extract of Ixora coccinea flowers was prepared for in vitro testing. Approximately 12mL of blood was extracted and separated into four sets: (A) Pure flower extract; (B) Flower extract in 1:1 dilution with NSS; (C) Plain tubes; and (D) Heparinized tube. Results: Analysis was done through paired T-test and results showed that there was a significant difference in the clotting time between no anticoagulant condition (M=10.01, SD=2.04) and Ixora coccinea flower extract condition (M=2.34, SD=1.03) t(29)=-22.498, p=0.000. Conclusion: There is no significant anticoagulant effect of Ixora coccinea (Santan) flower extract on normal human blood. Recommendations: The active compounds of Ixora coccinea flower with anticoagulant activity should be isolated, quantified and experimented for potency based on the anticoagulant activity in different concentrations while the procoagulant activity of the flower should also be studied further.
