Larvicidal activity of Persea americana leaf ethanol extract against Aedes aegypti.

Background: Aedes aegypti is the main mosquito vector of the dengue virus, a highly endemic disease in the Philippines. Mosquito control is essential in the prevention and intervention of the spread of the disease, currently through the use of synthetic chemical insecticides. This study is aimed to discover the potential use of Persea americana leaf extract in eradicating mosquitoes as a better alternative to the commercial larvicides. Objectives: To obtain the LC50 and LC90 of P. americana leaf ethanol extract towards the third and fourth instars larvae of Aedes aegypti and to compare this to that of Temephos based on literature review. Study Design: Randomized controlled trial. Study Setting: Cebu Institute of Medicine / Pathology Laboratory. Study Population: Third and fourth instars Aedes aegypti larvae. Maneuvers: The leaves of P. americana were processed for crude extraction using ethanol. Extracts were bio-assayed for larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti following phase 1 of the 2005 World Health Organization for Laboratory and Field Testing of mosquito larvicides. Outcome Measures: The mortality was observed after exposure to extract for 24 hours. Result: The ethanol extract of the P. americana leaf exhibited evidence of larvicidal activity. After statistical analysis using log probit software, the LC50 and LC90 values were calculated respectively. Conclusions and Recommendations: The ethanol extracts of the P. americana leaf, although not as lethal as Temephos (LC50 = 0.0.0058; LC90 = 0.0086), showed potential as an alternative source of a more sustainable solution for the control Ae. aegypti. The researchers recommend the use of a fresh extract, the use of a proper sample size, and that phytochemical analysis be done on the extract to determine its possible larvicidal components.
