Acute and chronic toxicity studies of Lagnob (Ficus septica Burm. F. 1768) fruit extract on albino rats (Rattus norvegicus).

Lagnob (Ficus septica) contained medicinal principles and it showed various pharmacological activities such as analgesic, antifungal, diuretic and laxative but no toxicity studies have been considered yet. The aims of this study are to determine the acute toxicity of the test solution as manifested by behavioral changes and mortality, to determine LD50 of the test solution, and to determine chronic toxicity of the test solutions as indicated through behavioral changes and vital organ weights. The test solutions where prepared by maceration using ethanol and decoction prepared into three different doses, 100mg/KBW, 500mg/KBW and 1000mg/KBW. In the study five rats were used for each dose. The test solutions were administered to the rats orally in both tests. In 24 hours acute toxicity study lasted for 45 days administration of both extracts. The rats excreted more stools in a day than normal and a presence of rectal bleeding, mortality and changes in vital organ weights were recorded and white fat-like in stool was observed. The ethanol free extract exhibit lesser effect compared to the aqueous free extract. The acute toxicity study indicates that the LD50 of the fruit extract Ficus septica is more than the limit dose and is relatively safe when administered orally in rats, but not safe when use chronically.
