Genotoxicity and anti-mitotic activity of "Lato", Caulerpa lentillifera (J. Agardh) Weber-van Bosse, 1898 and "Gulaman", Gracilaria verrucosa (Hudson) Papenfuss 1950.

Algae are said to be one of the most promising long-term sustainable sources of food, feed and other products.  Algae have been used in animal and human diets since very early times. In the study, the researchers determined the genotoxicity using Allium cepa assay and anti-mitotic activity using chromosome aberration assay of Caulerpa lentillifera (lato) and Gracilaria verrucosa (gulaman). The extracts from decoction, Dichloromethane, N-hexane and Ethanol with 100% and 50% concentration test solution were tested on root meristems of Allium cepa and on sea urchin zygotes. The result showed that both 100% and 50% of the different test solution exhibit inhibition. The abnormalities observed macroscopically in the root meristems of Allium cepa were stunted growth, wilt and discoloration and microscopically were inhibition of the cells, stopping at interphase stage. The abnormalities observed in the sea urchins zygotes were cell busting, cell morphological distortion and cell inhibition. The result of this study confirmed that the decocted extracts, extracts of dichloromethane, N-haxane and ethanolic extracts of lato and gulaman exerted genotoxic and anit-mitotic effect. The constituents that may be responsible for its effects are for lato (Caulerpa lentillifera) there is the presence of alkaloid which is the caulerpin and  caulerpicin and for the gulaman (Gracilaria verrucosa) there is the  presence of eicosapentaenoic acids which are precursors of prostaglandins.
