Determination of antimicrobial property of Jatropha curcas ("Tuba tuba") stem and leaf crude extracts against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Background: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has undergone rapid evolutionary changes and epidemiologic expansion. It has spread beyond the confines of health care facilities, emerging anew in the community (Deresinski, 2004). Any person can be infected with the bacteria but immunocompromised patients are most susceptible. Invasive infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus are associated with worse outcomes, in addition to prolonged hospital stays, higher costs of treatment and increased mortality (Zahar et. al., 2005) due to its multi-resistance to numerous antibiotics. Relevant to address the latter, studies have found phenolic, tannins and flavonoids as potential antimicrobial agents  in Jatropha curcas (Tuba tuba) leaf and stem, respectively. Purpose: This paper aims to determine inhibitory effect of leaf and stem extracts of Jatropha curcas plant against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Method: Crude extracts of the leaf and stem were impregnated into 6 mm discs and were tested by Kirby Bauer Disc Diffusion Method on a stock culture of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. vancomycin was used as the positive control. There were five replicate discs for testing per plant part. Results: After 24 hours of incubation, the zones of inhibition by the stem  (6 mm), leaf (6 mm) extracts, vancomycin (26 mm) were the same in all its replicates. By two-tailed t-test analysis, c the null hypothesis was rejected, there was a significant difference between zone of inhibition of vancomycin and both J. curcas extracts. Conclusion: There was no demonstrable inhibition of growth, therefore the J. curcas leaf and stem extracts were not sensitive to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
